Ingredients
- 1 pound ground turkey
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 green bell pepper, small dice
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar (for sweetness)
- 1 tsp Dijon or yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 hamburger buns
- Shredded cheese, pickles or coleslaw
Instructions
- Cook the Ground Turkey: Add a tablespoon of oil to a large skillet over medium heat. Then add the onions, green bell pepper and garlic. Saute for 2-3 minutes or until the veggies are cooked.
- Add in ground turkey. Slice into skillet. Cook, breaking it up with a spatula, until no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes. Dispose of any leftover fluid or oil.
- Prepare the Sloppy Joe Sauce: Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and brown sugar to the skillet with the cooked turkey and veggies. Add Chili powder and smoked paprika Season generously with salt and pepper to taste.
- Simmer the Mixture: Turn the heat down low and simmer turkey mixture for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. The flavors come together and the sauce thickens. Fry for 4-5 minutes on the other side and splash with some water if it becomes too thick.
- Toast the Buns: While the turkey is cooking, toast your hamburger buns a bit in a toaster or on a skillet for extra crunch.
- Assemble the Sloppy Joes: Using a spoon, load turkey onto the bottom halves of the buns. Finish this sandwich off with toppings like shredded cheese, pickles, or coleslaw for some flavor and more chew. Top with the remaining bun and serve hot.
