Ingredients

  • 8 hot dogs (regular or veggie)
  • 1 (8-ounce) tube refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 8 slices of cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp mustard or ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil for brushing
  • Nonstick cooking spray or parchment paper

Instructions

Freaky Franks

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly spray with cooking oil.
  2. Prepare the Hot Dogs: Roll out crescent roll dough and cut in strips about 1/4 inch. Wind up each hot dog with the crescent roll dough strips to look like "mummies," and remember to leave a space on top for the "face.".
  3. Note: If you want cheese, wrap with a slice of cheddar before rolling up with the crescent.
  4. Bake the Freaky Franks: Arrange the wrapped hot dogs, seam-side down, on a lined baking sheet, leaving space between each. Optionally, brush the top of the dough with some olive oil (don't overdo it) for a golden finish. Bake 12 to 15 minutes until crescent dough is golden brown and hot dogs are heated through.
  5. Add the Eyes: Allow the hot dogs to cool once baked. Mustard or ketchup could be the backdrop for some "eyes" on those peering wonderous hot dogs as they are sauteed, giving rise to your new-found Freaky Franks!
  6. Serve: Top with whatever dipping sauces you love, egg ketchup or mustard OR a cool “bloody” marinara sauce. Serve with a side of Garlic Parmesan Fries or Sweet Potato Wedges for the perfect combo

Tips and Variations:

  1. Spicy Version: Give your Freaky Franks some heat by using hot sausage or jalapeño cheese
  2. Veg: Swap in veggie hot dogs or another plant-based option for your favorite vegetarian sausages to make this recipe suitable for vegetarians.
  3. Gravy Eyes: If you want gravy for a scarier feel, try cutting some livers up and boiling them in water to make the sauce extra thick, making it easier for dripping down their throat.
  4. Variety of Cheese: You can also mix up the cheese with pepper jack or Swiss if you want a variety.
  5. Substitution Dough: If you prefer instead of crescent dough, this pizza can be made with puff pastry or pizza dough.
