Ingredients

  • For the Patty:
  • - 1 lb (450g) ground beef. Get the 80% lean, 20% fat kind for juiciness.
  • - 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • - 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • - /4 teaspoon garlic
  • For the Burger:
  • - 4 burger buns (preferably sesame seed buns)
  • - 4 slices of cheddar or American cheese
  • - 4 lettuce leaves
  • - 1 big tomato, sliced up
  • - 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • - Pickles
  • - Ketchup, mustard, or mayo for serving
  • For Cooking:
  • - A tablespoon veggie oil or butter for grilling (if needed)

Instructions

1. Prepare the patties:

In a bowl, mix ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic, and onion powders.
Mix gently. Don’t overdo it, or patties will get tough.
Split into 4 equal parts and shape into patties about half an inch thick. Make a small dent with your thumb in each patty center to keep 'em from puffing up while cooking.

2. Heat the Grill or Pan:

Preheat grill or skillet to medium-high heat. If using a skillet, add some oil or butter to keep stuff from sticking to it.

3. Cook the patties:

Put patties on grill or in skillet. Cook for about 3 to 4 minutes on one side till they brown nicely.
Flip and cook another 3 to 4 minutes on the other side.
In the last minute of cooking, place a cheese slice on top of each patty. Cover a grill or skillet with a lid to melt cheese.

4. Toast the Buns:

Toast burger buns on grill or in pan till golden brown while patties are cooking. Butter them lightly if you want extra flavor.

5. Assemble the Burgers:

Spread ketchup, mustard, or mayo as per your choice on the bottom bun.
Add a lettuce leaf, a tomato slice, and some onion slices.
Put a cheesy patty on top of veggies and add pickles if desired.
Top with the other half of the bun and serve right away.

 Tips and Variations:

  1. Choose the Right Beef: Ground beef with a bit more fat makes juicier burgers. Leaner stuff is drier; more fat means potential flare-ups on grill.
  2. Flavor Additions: Add Worcestershire sauce, chopped onions, or herbs like parsley into the meat mix for added flavor.
  3. Cooking Temperature: Cook burgers to medium, around an internal temperature of about 160°F, but tweak based on what you like the best. For well-done, go longer till it’s at least at a temperature of about 170°F inside.
  4. Grilling Tips: Don’t press down patties with a spatula during cooking, which keeps juices inside, making them tender. If you don't want to grill, not a problem. Use a cast iron skillet just as well indoors.
  5. Cheese Options: Cheese and American are classics, but trying Swiss, Pepper Jack, and Blue Cheese gives unique twists.
  6. Bun Choices: Brioche adds sweetness and softness, and pretzel buns give chewy, salty contrast.
  7. Topping Ideas: Beyond regular fixings, try caramelized onions, sauteed mushrooms, bacon, or even a fried egg for a gourmet experience.
