Ingredients
- sandwich bread (ciabatta, sourdough) 8 slices
- 8 slices of ham
- 4 slices Cheddar or Swiss cheese
- 4 Tablespoons Softened Butter
- 1 spreadable mustard or mayonnaise
- Any sauces you like (mustard, ranch, marinara)
Instructions
- Prepare the Bread: Place slices of bread on a clean, flat surface. If you prefer, once the slices are separated, spread a thin layer of mustard or mayonnaise on the inside of each slice.
- Assemble the Panini: Sandwich a slice of cheese between four slices of bread. Spoon the ham over the cheese, top with remaining bread slices.
- Butter the Bread: Spread on the outside of each sandwich and flatten some softened butter to make sure as you put it in the pan later that it evenly makes a nice golden crispy crust.
- Grill the Panini: Preheat a panini press or grill pan over medium heat. Lay the sandwiches in the press or on the hot panini pan and grill 3 to 4 minutes per side until bread is golden and cheese has melted. If using a pan, press down hard with the spatula or heavy pan for a panini-like effect.
- Slice into Dippers: When the panini are done, pull them from the heat and put them on a cutting board. Slice each sandwich into narrow strips or bite-size bits; these are your 'dippers. '
- Serve with Dipping Sauces: Place the panini dippers on a platter to serve along with different dipping sauce options such as mustard, ranch, or marinara. They also go great with tomato soup, which is a classic combo.
Tips and Variations:
- Cheese Options: Mix it up with some provolone, mozzarella, or even pepperjack cheese for a twist in taste. Vegetables serve a triple purpose of adding firmer texture, healthier nutrition, and beautiful color to your panini.
- Heat Up Your Panini: Put some spicy mustard, jalapeños, and a little hot sauce at the layer to lit your meats on fire.
- Variations: This filling is great in panini made with ciabatta or sourdough, but you can use any bread; whole wheat, rye, or brioche will work too.
- Dips: Have fun with your dips. Serve with your favorite condiments, like BBQ sauce, aioli, or even pesto for added flavor, in addition to the conventional suspects. If you do not have a panini press, then cook the sandwiches in a grill pan or regular skillet, then use a cast iron skillet to press down on the sandwiches for that true panini texture.
- Leftover Tip: Ham and Cheese Panini Dippers are perfect for using or even dumping the remaining ham from your vacation meals, so make Paris Salami with boat trip remaining sandwiches a day after streaming. Top with your favorite cheese, and you are done.
